Jake Davis will take Illinois to the Final Four

Think of 2025-26 Illinois Basketball. What comes to mind? Keaton Wagler? The Balkan Boys? Kylan Boswell? Tyler Underwood's Kenpom #1 offense? All of those are key building blocks that make this years team great, but just like bricks need mortar, plants need sun, and I need an ice cold beer on a Friday night, Illinois needs Jake Davis.

When determining whether a team has Final Four potential analysts will typically look at a teams front end talent, overall size and athleticism, and scheme. Illinois already has all of that, but Jake Davis sets this team apart. He's the connective tissue that brings all of those other elements together. For one, he's got that indescribable mojo that keeps the team chemistry flowing. Guys gravitate to him and he's built an unshakable confidence not only on the court but with the media:

Comments like these may feel small and maybe even immature (if you're a square), but when coming from a guy who's been leaving his heart on the court and shooting over 43% from 3 they mean a lot. This motivates not only his teammates, but the fans whose energy just feeds right back into the team.

Now his swagger and way he holds teammates accountable is one thing, but what sets Jake Davis apart is how he's able to parlay this with on the court performance. He's always been a sharpshooter, but his game has evolved this season from being a catch and shoot guy who just hovers around the corner to having more of the offense flow through him and be able to create shots out of rhythm. He doesn't force his shots, makes them when he takes them, and can always be trusted to make the right play, hardly ever turning the ball over. This dependability has earned him #3 in the COUNTRY in single player offensive rating on Kenpom. On top of this he's also evolved from being a liability on defense to becoming a plus defender and I no longer cringe when I see him in isolation defending other B1G guards.

My last note on Jake is that he's starting to develop a clutch gene. He always seems to make the shot that ignites a run. Down 7 early in the second half? Jake Davis 3. Up one and looking for a run to start pulling away 10 minutes later? Jake Davis 3. Few Illinois basketball players have ever made me feel as comfortable as 2026 Jake Davis and I predict that before B1G season is over we will see a huge Jake moment.

Now I'm not here saying that Jake Davis is the best basketball player in the world. But if your team's first guy off the bench is Jake Fucking Davis then you can go ahead and start booking accommodations for Indy now.

p.s. Jake if you ever cut your hair I will kill you
